eXXcecute - Artist Statement
Wendy Liu is a multi-media and medium artist from Toronto, Canada that explores physical and digital art in cohesion with music under lenses of psychology and human behaviour. Graduated with a Bachelor’s in Arts from the University of Waterloo with a major in Psychology, they take many aspects from their professional work previously as a therapist to dive into the human reactions and behaviours that are experienced when subject to various shifts and emotional states. Mental illness having been prominent, Liu’s works are a combination of emotional exploration and restoration from a life of complex post-traumatic stress disorder. It is a way of reclamation over the environments endured and a testament to a strength of what human resilience can show through art.
Liu’s digital works here comprise of intuitive colour choices with bold expression in shapes and line work which are then frame in a symmetrical border and distorted to create a sense of inter-dimensionality through the image.
By increasing the amount of visual processing that occurs, the viewer often times produce behavioural responses in a moving image rather than still imagery. In addition, text on images induce psychological cognitive dissonance, which bring the viewers attention throughout the image later on to either reduce or induce more or less dissonance. Through analyzing human behaviours in response to various forms of art, Liu aspires to create larger interactive installations that delve further into therapeutic healing in the future.
